Charmaine Chan started learning pipa and violin when she was 12. With her outstanding performance, she was promoted to be section leader in both the school Chinese orchestra and chamber orchestra, during which she also self learned zhongruan and cello. She was also active in all kinds of music activities, including school choir, this helped her to build up her strong ensemble background. In 2007, Charmaine came to Vancouver as an international student and continued her education in UBC. In the same year, she began to learn under Ms Liu Gui Lian who is a world-class pipa player, and she also joined the BC Chinese Orchestra where she quickly became a committee member. Charmaine is also a winner of 2008 Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival in both pipa solo and in small ensemble. With her established solo and ensemble experience, Charmaine proves to be a valuable talent to Pentatonics
